Founded in 1893 in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan, KAIHARA is a denim fabric manufacturer with roots in handwoven, indigo-dyed kasuri textiles. Drawing on more than 130 years of dyeing and weaving expertise, we bring traditional craftsmanship into contemporary denim production. Our strength lies in an integrated in-house production system encompassing spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing. Connecting knowledge across these processes allows us to develop yarn, colour, texture and handfeel as a coherent whole. Each stage contributes to a shared vision of the finished fabric, supporting both consistent quality and a wide range of creative possibilities.
At the heart of our expertise is the indigo-dyeing knowledge we have cultivated since our founding. In 1970, we developed our own rope-dyeing machine, paving the way for full-scale denim production. By precisely adjusting dye formulations, oxidation times and yarn tension, we create varied shades while preserving the white yarn core essential to denim's characteristic fading. Our approach considers not only the fabric's initial appearance, but also the character it develops through wear and washing.
Our weaving capabilities range from characterful selvedge denim made on traditional shuttle looms to fabrics produced using advanced equipment. Exploring combinations of yarn, dyeing, weave structure and finishing allows us to reveal a broad spectrum of expressions within denim.
